Feb 21, 2002 Former President Bill Clinton Drops In On Montreal Former US President Bill Clinton attended a fundraiser in the downtown Montreal venue of Place des Arts Monday February 18th. Proceeds from the speaking engagement went towards local hospital care. Due to dwindling funding, socialized medicine has been the subject of much hot debate in Canada. |

Among the issues, Clinton spoke about continued support of Western debt relief to third world countries, an issue close to the heart of U2 lead singer Bono. The purpose of debt relief is to give struggling countries a chance to get back on their feet, thus helping to eliminate poverty on the planet. If you are interested in supporting this high profile issue, you can get more details at the official site of DropTheDebt.org. During the occasion, Clnton was given a poster by a famous Montreal Gazette cartoonist. The artwork depicted Clinton playing a sax with superimposed Montreal Jazz Festival writing. It remains to be seen whether or not Clinton will return to Montreal to take the stage for the summertime version of one of the best jazz gigs in the world. One reason why Montreal's Jazz Fest is up there with the best: hot Montreal women combined with hot weather. Undoubtedly, Clinton's charitable visit was greatly appreciated by Montreal, a music city which has recently been stiffed by numerous musical acts (Bono visited Montreal twice on U2's recent Elevation tour).
