Feb 16, 2002 Summit of Hip Hop Heads Turns Heads Not since the late Howard Cosell graced the booth of Monday Night Football in the 70s and early 80s has someone told it like it is. If Cossell was alive in today's disgusting politically correct climate, he would rip the shit out of every two-face clown walking this planet. Of course, Cosell would have used his annoying nasal voice in doing so. Here is a Real Player audio clip of Cossell announcing John Lennon's death during a MNF game in 1980. According to this VH1 story, there were several "tell it like it is" comments made at the recent Hip Hop convention in Beverly Hills, California. Among the many candid comments: Suge Knight: "If Farrakhan can be here and Suge Knight can be here, all these other guys can be here" The artists who did not show to support THEIR industry deserved Suge's ripping. What kind of supposed artist are you if you can't even support your own kind? "Knight condemned Eminem's lyrics, criticized Janet Jackson for using images of Tupac Shakur in her concerts" Knight is on the mark here. Eminem's and Limp Bizkit's lyrics are anger ridden. They serve no beneficial purpose for today's already fucked up youth which grows up too fast. Gone are the days when you learned something important and valuable in music lyrics. As for Janet using Tupac's images in concert - so what? This is called a tribute from one friend to another. Janet did not deserve being blasted by Suge here. She is way too classy to be dragged through the mud. "Knight accused women of wanting to be men and said they are not strong enough to be leaders" Commenting on this one may mean suicide for me, since I am married. Minister Louis Farrakhan: "Children can't read 'Dick and Jane,' but they can recite your raps," Farrakhan said to the assembled. "The question is, what are you feeding them? The hip-hop generation has the real power, but in order to realize your true potential you must do what is right, not just what is popular." Do what is right, not what is popular. Is the music industry listening to this one? Even if they are, it's too late for them. "The summit also agreed to support spoken-word artist Sarah Jones in her lawsuit against the Federal Communications Commission, which fined a Portland, Oregon, radio station for playing a track of hers that addresses homophobia in rap music and references lyrics as examples." The FCC should take a chill pill on this one. Now, if you're looking for the whitey version of the Hip Hop summit click here This one is complete with the customary politically correct gibberish. Although we are no fans of hip hop music, we'll give the nod to the Hip Hoppers over the AlterNOs on this one. The Hip Hoppers get big marks for entertainment and speaking their mind. The AlterNOs, on the other hand, scored well on irrelevance and corporate ass kissing. And people wonder why Hip Hop has put the death nail into a disgustingly santized hypocritical rock/pop music industry. Whether or not you like Hip Hop, at least it has managed to stay away from the bullshit. An established rock artist relying on today's plastic one dimensional media to push his product is one sad sight. For the risk of telling it like it is, it makes the artist look desparate and his product cheap. Sphinx |
