April 6, 2002 Marilyn Is No Star In This Dope Show Once again, Marilyn Manson has to defend himself. It just seems whatever this alternative rock star does, he cannot escape controversy. Take a look at this VH1 story which states that Manson has been named as a defendant in a wrongful death lawsuit. |
|
The lawsuit alleges that Marilyn Manson supplied the deceased, 28 year old Jennifer Syme, with cocaine during a party at Manson's home. After leaving Manson's home, Syme was driven and dropped off at her home during the dawn hours. She then entered her vehicle and drove while allegedly under the influence of the controlled substance. Her death was caused when she struck three parked vehicles and was ejected from the driver's seat because she was not wearing a seat belt. Is Manson liable because a 28 year old adult is taken home safely after partying in his home? Is the alternative shock rocker to blame because the deceased allegedly used poor life threatening judgment by taking cocaine, driving while under the influence and not wearing a seatbelt? |

If people do not know how to party responsibly, then they should not party at all. It is bad enough that bars and establishments which sell alcohol have to sometimes take the blame for people's extreme stupidities. Now we also have to shift the blame on house party hosts because their guests do not know when enough is enough? It is amazing what people would do for a buck these days. Manson is famous and has money so who cares if he was responsible or not for Syme's death; just go after him and see what you can get. If the party in question was at any average person's apartment, would he be named in a suit? This lawsuit happy mentality is obviously the product of a society which has become too distorted and warped to see its own flaws. Maybe if the person who filed the suit against Manson, the mother of Ms. Syme, had done her job and raised her child properly, her daughter would not have been allegedly taking drugs and hanging out during the early morning hours. Should we once again take the easy way out and point the finger at Manson for Syme's questionable behavior prior to her death? This brings to mind the Columbine High School shootings, another high profile incident where Manson received unjustified blame. Yeah, like those deranged students who shot up the high school were model students with a "perfect" family life until they started listening to Manson's music and playing violent video games. The more that uninformed scapegoat theorists try to simplify such problems, the more complex they become. Most of the time, there are no bad children, just bad parents - and even worse attornies. Manson's response to the lawsuit can be read here on his web site. Sphinx |
