Feb 28, 2002 Grammy Awards Dish Up Plenty of Crap With Few Highlights The GramoPhoney Award shows were held in Los Angeles, despite little or no genuine interest from an apathetic music public. The telecast was long, boring (reflecting the current state of music) and plagued with music which lacks appeal to today's younger generation. There were, of course, a few highlights in between the torture we were made to endure watching this load of crap. Fortunately, I fell asleep after Mikey Boy's ignorant speech about the internet and the current pathetic state of the music industry. One of the highlights was the appearance of Recording Artists Coalition (RAC) frontman Don Henley, who went through the "award show motions" with great class. While announcing some insignificant award, Henley stated the nominees for tonight's show range from U2 to U2. Obviously, Henley was referring to the broad, diverse and shallow talent in today's industry. The previous night, the RAC held four concerts around the Los Angeles area to raise money for artists to fight the music industry. Interestingly enough, there was little or no mainstream press coverage for the RAC concerts. This apparently displays the music media's indifference towards "real artists." Another bright spot was Train, with front man Pat Monahan giving an inspiring performance where he appeared relaxed and comfortable. Like a runaway Train, they are certainly picking up momentum. Hip Hopper Jay-Z decision to boycott was also one of the show's better moments. Jay-Z was boycotting the frivolous ceremonies because he thought hip hop was not properly represented. Now why would the thoughtful and generous Grammys do something like that? Other performers who impressed were class acts and living legends Bob Dylan, Patti LaBelle. The Dave Matthews Band also, although their song "The Space Between" was a bit dated, like the Grammys. Fortunately, after our boy Mikey Greene (Grammy frontman) dished out a load of crap to the music fan, I fell asleep due to boredom. Thankfully, I did not have to stay up the whole night and lose sleep to watch some pre-fabricated show which was pre-censored and drained of all spontaneity by a scared shitless music industry. Now you know why the outspoken hip hop artists were bumped from the show? Let's get this over with. As for the winners, who really gives a shit. How much value and credibility can you put into an award that is given to you by an "alleged" pervert? With today's youth, it has gotten to the point where winning such an award is more of a sell out stigma than anything else. Better luck next year Grammy boy. Hopefully, next year's show will be put together by amateurs who know nothing about music. After this debacle, anything is better. Sphinx |
