Feb 17, 2002 Techno and Hip Hop Genres Destroying Record Labels The current overwhelming popularity of Techno/Electronica and Hip Hop with today's younger generation has put the major record labels in another predicament. You see, a good portion of today's musical youth prefers to listen to techno and hip hop, which is THEIR music. And since many of the copyrights to this music are not owned by the major record companies, the labels have failed to capitalize on their enormous popularity. Reportedly, the major labels own the copyrights to approximately 80% of the music out there. However, today's kids think the labels' music is the equivalent to country music - folksy and boring. In today's underground music scene, the kids with musical brains view artists who are tied to major labels as sell outs and flat out reject them. Since the labels permitted rock and alternative music to die a slow death over the past fifteen years, they are now left holding the bag. They should hold on tight to that bag, because they'll need it to piss in real soon. Therefore, it does not take an economic professor to realize the value of the major labels' selections is not what it used to be. Less demand for your product equals less value. Ask EMI or Capital or Virgin or whatever the fuck they are called. If you are an online music companiey that is willing to shell out a fortune for licensing deals, you have been warned. It is rather sobering to realize that in the near future, rock and alternative music (a large percentage of the labels' catalogues) will no longer exist. Unlike other generations, most of today's younger music listeners have no clue about previous music forms. And they are in no hurry to go out and discover them. Eventually, once the mostly middle aged followers of rock and alternative die off, the music will die with them. Techno and Hip Hop have managed to creep up from the underground and stick it to the labels right where it hurts - in their wallets. Not unlike file sharing, the labels had more than ample opportunity to change direction and avoid smashing into a giant iceberg. Due to insatiable greed, they refused to heed the warnings. Too bad for them. Officially, we can now put the rock resurgance rumor to rest. This rumor was initiated and perpetuated by an ignorant music media, who has been manipulated (or payed off) into reporting a bunch of hogwash. Due to an uncontrolable epidemic of incompetence in the music industry, the labels couldn't engineer a rock comeback if their lives depended on it. Even if they do have a biased, less than credible media supporting them. Stick a fork in 'em. They're cooked. Sphinx |
